Why We Make Photo Frames Without Glass

Short answer: Framky photo frames are without glass on purpose. Pigment colour stays visible, window light does not glare on glass, the hang is light, and there is nothing to shatter around kids or pets. The print sits on a rigid cardboard plate. Dust wipes off antistatic matte photographic paper. If a print is marked, we replace it.

Traditional glazed frames put glass between you and the photo. That glass reflects lamps and windows, mutes colour, and adds weight. It can also break. Framky MDF frames skip that layer. We use pigment printing with a set of 12 inks on matte photographic paper, glued to a rigid cardboard plate.

Glare and colour

Glass is a mirror as soon as a window or a lamp sits in front of it. You see the room first, then the photo. Matte photographic paper scatters light, so the image stays readable at noon and in the evening.

Colour is the second loss with glass. Glass sits on top of the print and knocks saturation down. Framky prints with a set of 12 inks so the printer covers a wide Pantone range (twelve inks in the machine, not twelve colours on the page). Without glass you see that depth at a glance.

Sharpness still depends on the file. A wall print does not always need 300 DPI. Check how much DPI you need for photo printing before you pick a large size.

Weight and safety

Glass is heavy for its area. Take it out and a 50 × 70 cm Framky frame stays at or below about 900 g. That weight is why self-adhesive hangers can hold a kit on a sound, painted wall, with a 1:1 paper template and no drilling.

Safety is the same construction, not a separate product line. A glazed frame that falls can leave shards. A Framky frame that falls is MDF, paper, and board. There is no glass to shatter. Pets follow the same rule. A claw can mark paper. It cannot smash glass.

Antistatic paper

Glass on a traditional frame collects dust and every fingerprint. You then clean a reflective surface that shows the smear.

Framky uses antistatic matte photographic paper. It barely attracts dust. When a film of dust does appear, wipe it with a dry microfibre cloth. Do not use glass cleaner, wet wipes, or water. Keep liquid off the print.

Swap the print

Life marks a wall. A toddler scribbles. A frame is knocked. A cat tests a corner. With a glazed frame you often replace the whole object, or you fight a stuck backing.

Humidity and bathrooms

MDF and photographic paper want a normal indoor climate: about 18–24 °C and 40–60% relative humidity, the same range as wooden furniture. They do not like standing steam or splash.

A bathroom gallery wall can work in a well-ventilated guest WC, or in a bathroom where humidity drops quickly and the wall is away from the shower. Skip the wall next to a daily-use shower with poor extraction. Do not hang a set where water will hit the print.

Kitchen walls are fine away from the hob and the sink. Direct splash is the limit.
