Hang the centre of a gallery wall about 150 cm (57–60 in) from the floor. Above a sofa or bed, leave 15–25 cm. Heights for every room in one table.
Hang the centre of the whole gallery wall about 150 cm (57–60 in) from the floor. That is average standing eye level, and galleries use it too. Treat the gallery as one big picture: its middle sits at that height, not the middle of each frame. Above furniture, leave 15–25 cm between the top of the sofa, bed or sideboard and the bottom of the lowest frame.
"Too high" is the most common verdict
In October 2026 we read 435 forum threads and 2,728 comments about photo gallery walls from the UK, the US, Germany, the Netherlands and Poland. People rarely start a thread to ask about height: it comes up in only 6% of threads. But when they post a photo and ask what feels wrong, the answer they get most often is "it's hung too high". That was the single most common diagnosis in Houzz comments.
Height is also what couples argue about. Posters describe rows with their partner over where the frames should go, and ask whose eye level counts when one of them is 15 cm taller. The rule below settles it: use a fixed number, not anyone's eyes.
Gallery wall height by room
| Where | Rule | Typical numbers |
|---|
| Empty wall | Centre of the whole gallery at eye level | 145–155 cm (57–61 in) to the centre |
| Above a sofa | Bottom edge close to the backrest, so wall and sofa read as one | 15–25 cm above the backrest; gallery about 2/3 of the sofa width |
| Above a bed | Bottom edge above the headboard, with room to sit up and lean back | 15–25 cm above the headboard |
| Above a sideboard or console | Same as a sofa | 15–25 cm above the top |
| Dining room | People look while seated, so you can go a little lower | Centre about 5–10 cm lower than in a hallway |
| Hallway | Standing eye level; keep clear of door frames and light switches | 145–155 cm to the centre |
| Stairs | One line parallel to the stairs, not a new height on each step | About 150 cm above the step under the middle of the gallery |
| Child's room | Lower, so the child can see the photos | Around the child's eye level |

How to find the nail height in 4 steps
- Choose the centre height. Use 150 cm on an empty wall. Above furniture, start from the top of the furniture and add 15–25 cm for the bottom edge instead.
- Measure the height of the whole gallery, from the top of the highest frame to the bottom of the lowest one.
- Work out the top edge. Top edge = centre height + half of the gallery height.
- Find each hanging point. Measure the distance from the top of each frame down to its hanger, and mark the wall that far below the frame's top edge.
Example: a gallery 90 cm tall, centred at 150 cm, has its top edge at 195 cm and its bottom edge at 105 cm.
With a 1:1 paper template you skip steps 3 and 4. Tape the template so its centre line sits at the height you chose, and mark the hanging points through it. Every Framky kit includes one.
Do high ceilings change the height?
No. The ceiling height does not change where your eyes are. In a room with a high ceiling, keep the centre near 150 cm and let a taller gallery grow upwards, rather than lifting the whole group. A gallery that starts too high looks like it is floating away from the furniture.
When to break the rule
- Very tall or very short households: shift the centre by a few centimetres, not more. Guests and the next owners will look at it too.
- Over a low sofa or a low bed: follow the 15–25 cm gap above the furniture, even if the centre ends up below 145 cm.
- A single row of small frames: keep the row's centre line at eye level, so the eye does not have to look up or down.
Hanging it at the right height without extra holes
Framky frames are MDF without glass and hang on self-adhesive hangers, so getting the height wrong does not leave holes in the wall. Self-adhesive hangers do not damage the wall when the paint is firmly bonded to the plaster and the plaster is stable. On other walls, use 2 nails in the inner corners of each frame (nails not included). See hanging photo frames without drilling and how to hang pictures on concrete, plasterboard, brick and plaster.
Frequently asked questions
How high should a gallery wall be hung?
Put the centre of the whole gallery about 150 cm (57–60 in) from the floor. Measure to the middle of the group, not to the middle of each frame.
How high above a sofa should a gallery wall go?
Leave 15–25 cm between the top of the backrest and the bottom of the lowest frame. The gallery should be about two thirds as wide as the sofa.
How high above a bed should pictures hang?
Leave 15–25 cm above the headboard, so you can sit up and lean back without touching the frames.
How high should pictures be in a hallway?
Keep the centre at standing eye level, about 145–155 cm. Leave space around door frames and light switches.
How do I set the height on stairs?
Draw one line parallel to the stairs and keep every frame on it. About 150 cm above the step under the middle of the gallery is a good start.
Whose eye level should we use?
Neither. Use 150 cm to the centre. It is a standard that works for most adults and for guests.
